The stories we tell ourselves about our violent origins paint a picture not of our power over the world, but of our interdependence. Against the dual, self-amplifying threats of climate collapse - a legacy of industrialization - and social collapse caused by advancements in technology, how can creation stories guide us towards an Earth that remains a viable home for “the commonwealth of living beings”(1)? After the Collapse: Machine Cosmology is a constellation of works that recognize traces of intention or authenticity in the artificial (2), and locate our path to survival through deep listening and engagement with folk wisdom and intelligence different from our own.
After the Collapse: Machine Cosmology (2021-present) is a collection of works-in-progress based on creation myths generated using a large language model fine-tuned on creation myths from around the world. The physical works are made based on sketches generated using a LORA model fine-tuned on the artist’s works.
